Meeting the need for primary healthcare for athletes in underserved areas around the Triangle
The Guardian Program for Sports Medicine, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was established to meet the need for primary healthcare for athletes in underserved areas around the Triangle. We believe every student athlete deserves top quality care, from start to finish. To this aim, we provide funds for a multitude of services: Preparticipation physicals, concussion baseline testing and management, sideline evaluation and injury management by certified and licensed athletic trainers, injury treatment and rehabilitation, and provider education- for ATs, coaches, administrators.

The American Medical Association has estimated that the athletic pre-participation examination serves as the sole routine health maintenance check-up for 80 to 90 percent of adolescents.
Did you know?
An estimated 3.8 million concussions occur each year in the United States as a result of sport and physical activity. North Carolina has legislation called the Gfeller-Waller Act, specifically addressing concussions in sport.
Did you know?
Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians. The services provided by ATs are comprised of prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Many times, an athletic trainer is the only trained healthcare provider immediately accessible to athletes at schools, club teams, and recreational leagues.
Did you know?
North Carolina does not require or fund athletic trainers at the middle school or secondary school level, meaning schools that cannot afford an AT will go without quality first-line medical care for injuries and concussions.
This is why the Guardian Program for Sports Medicine was developed– to make sure that no athlete in our region will have to go without potentially lifesaving care. GPSM exists to support the schools, sports organizations and student athletes in our community. In turn, we look to be supported by the community in order to continue to fund these programs and services. For more information on becoming a Guardian, please click on the donation link.
